Suffolk engages with community

More than 25 children gathered at the North Suffolk Library and Bennett’s Creek Park for Suffolk Public Library’s Day of Service on Saturday.
The children had the opportunity to refurbish bikes, make a bottle cap mural and clean up Bennett’s Creek Park.
“It’s a great way to bring the community together. They get the chance to work together with joint projects that benefit the community,” said Marketing and Community Relations Coordinator Angie Sumner. “It also is a chance for teens to earn their volunteer hours for school. Even those that don’t have requirements have the chance to work together and make friends within their community.”
The library partnered with Hund’s ReCycle Factory in Norfolk with an all-day bike building station that will benefit local children. Volunteers worked on these project bikes to get them back up to speed under the guidance of ReCycle Factory staff.
They spent time cleaning, repainting and replacing bike parts to make them look brand new for four children in need.
“We partnered with our Youth and Family Services department and the Camp SPL Mess Hall program at Morgan Memorial Library this summer. These bikes will be gifted to some kids who don’t have bikes and were nominated from that program because they were real assets to its success by helping out and always being positive,” Library Services Coordinator Angela Martin said in an email.
At Bennett’s Creek Park, volunteers not only cleaned up the park but also they made clay plant markers for the existing butterfly garden. The Suffolk Art League provided the clay to make the markers.
