A voter registration and restoration of rights event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at East Suffolk Recreation Center, 136 S. Sixth St.

The event is sponsored by the Alpha Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Inc., the Suffolk and Chesapeake/Virginia Beach alumnae chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Inc. and Virginia Organizing.

Citizens that have issues with registering to vote, like those with criminal records, will receive assistance on how to restore their right to vote. Some may have had their rights restored and not even know it, according to Dr. Victor Archie, a member of Omega Psi Phi Inc.

“Our goal is to raise awareness, reach out to all people who want to exercise their constitutional rights, and show them how to do that and get them on that path to restoration, if possible,” Archie said in a phone interview.

Citizens will only need to provide their information for volunteers to search with computers onsite.

Participants can also sign up for the chance to receive free health screenings this September in partnership with Sentara Obici Hospital. There will also be free food, games and other entertainment at this community-centric event.
