I read with dismay the column by Mr. Joe Guzzardi titled “Prospects for reducing rush-hour traffic,” specifically his immigration concerns.

I am a British citizen married to an American citizen, and we lived in the States many years before deciding to return to England. It never occurred to me that anyone in England would consider my husband a threat to their quality of life, despite the fact that the population density of England is nearly 12 times that of the United States (395 people per square kilometer compared to 33.2 for the USA, according to PopulationPyramid.net). Indeed, not only was he never considered a threat, he was warmly embraced by the British people.

When we made the decision to return to the States, I believed I would be making a positive contribution to society. Immediately upon my return, I gained employment and paid all my taxes. I did not realize that being an immigrant would lessen the standard of comfort and happiness experienced by the average American.

Unless Mr. Guzzardi is a native American, I assume at one point his family decided to immigrate here. I wonder if they diminished the quality of life for U.S. citizens upon their arrival?
