Smithfield Memorial Day events planned

Members of the American Legion Post 49, Legion Auxiliary, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will place flags on graves in St. Luke’s Cemetery from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, according to a press release from the American Legion.
“The public is welcome to join us in honoring the fallen interned there,” the release stated.
At 11 a.m. Monday, the Smithfield Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at the Smithfield Veterans Memorial at the corner of Church Street and Luter Driver. The American Legion Post 49, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545, Legion and VFW auxiliaries, Smithfield High School Band, and Smithfield High School JRTOC will participate. The featured speaker this year will be Pastor Marcel Berrios.
At 12:15 p.m., a reception and luncheon for memorial attendees will be held at American Legion Post 49, 818 S. Church St. At 12:30 p.m., a presentation of an original oil painting, “Fallen Comrades,” by Barbara Lively Mastaglio to Post 49 will take place during the reception luncheon.
