The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy softball team took a 4-0 loss Monday afternoon to Isle of Wight Academy in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state tournament.
After defeating IWA in its first two meetings this season, the third time was not the charm for the Lady Saints. This loss will undoubtedly sting the most, as the Lady Saints missed out on a chance to reach the state championship.
The first three innings went without either of the two teams scoring. IWA finally got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring three runs. They scored their final run in the fourth inning as NSA was unable to get on the board.
Reese Byrd and Madison Inscoe handled pitching duties, with Inscoe taking the loss. NSA totaled three hits as a team, one of their lowest outputs on the season.
NSA finished the season with a 21-3 record and was ranked No. 1 in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II poll for most of the season before a couple of losses pushed them down to No. 2. They had the No. 2 seed heading into the state tournament and defeated Seton School 13-0 in the state semifinal.
