Relay for Life happens Friday

The countdown for Suffolk’s Relay for Life is in single digits now, as the night of celebration and remembrance is only two days away.

Suffolk’s Relay will be from 6 to 11:30 p.m. at Nansemond River High School, 3301 Nansemond Parkway, and all are welcome to join in the festivities.

The weather does not look favorable for the Friday affair, but the Relay for Life team has been staying on top of weather updates, said Dana DeFreeuw, event lead. She and others have been keeping in contact with the city.

“We are ready to go for Friday, but we are keeping everyone’s safety in mind,” DeFreeuw said, adding that the group also does not want to damage the school’s field.

Assuming it goes ahead as scheduled, the event will feature plenty of entertainment from bounce houses and tumble trucks to pony rides and live music.

Some of the vendors that participated last year will be back again. Featured at the event will be 7 City Dinos with a life-size dinosaur character and the chance to dig for fossils.

“They are great, and they were dancing last year and doing all sorts of goofy stuff,” DeFreeuw said.

For those with a large appetite, Relay for Life partnered with Buffalo Wild Wings for a wing-eating contest at 8 p.m.

Throughout the evening, Relay will have live music and a DJ to provide a fun atmosphere for all those in attendance.

DJ Jay Dum, Paul Jarman and the Little Saints and Calvin Simmons and the GSC will be performing from 6:45 to 8 p.m. The headliner, the Joe Gosman Band, will play until 9:30 p.m., when the luminaria ceremony starts.

Other traditional Relay for Life events will be sprinkled throughout the night. The Survivor Lap will happen immediately following the opening ceremony around 6:15 p.m. This gives survivors and their families a chance to take a solo lap around the track.

The luminaria will begin at 9:30 p.m., but this year will be a little different compared to years past.

“We have a special luminaria ceremony planned, but I can’t tell you anything,” DeFreeuw said.

During the 9 p.m. lap, DeFreeuw and others at Relay will hand out red clown noses for $1 so they can have a red nose lap. Other creative and fun laps will include a bubble lap.

“We want everyone to come out and have fun and have a great time. We want them to enjoy all the company,” DeFreeuw said. “We want to celebrate, to remember and to fight. We celebrate survivors and the ones we lost, but we are fighting for a cure. It’s a night to come out and join together as a community.”

All the money spent at the Relay will go straight toward its fundraising goal of $150,000. Suffolk Relay for Life is currently at $81,300, and fundraising will continue into September.

There are still some options to help raise money for the cause around the community. J.M. Smucker Co. will have its golf tournament at the Nansemond River Golf Club on May 25.

Suffolk’s Mike Duman Auto Superstore, 2300 Godwin Blvd., will donate $10 to Relay for Life for every test drive taken on May 18 and 19. Those wanting to test drive must be 18 or older.

“We support a lot of different charities, and Relay for Life addresses the effects of cancer on patients and the loved ones. Everyone knows someone that has had cancer,” said Duman.
