A 3-year-old boy drowned in a backyard swimming pool Thursday morning, city officials say.

The tragedy was reported at 11:21 a.m. from the 2400 block of Box Elder Road, according to a city press release. The home is located in a rural area between Holland and Whaleyville.

Preliminary investigation found that “the child had wandered out of the home without family members being aware,” according to the press release.

The boy was found in the backyard swimming pool. Family members administered CPR until Suffolk Fire & Rescue arrived to continue lifesaving efforts.

The boy was taken by Sentara Obici Hospital but was later pronounced deceased.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the press release.
