Get engaged and clean up downtown

Suffolk Public Library will partner with Keep Suffolk Beautiful this Saturday to engage citizens and help them serve their community.

The Engage Suffolk Day of Service will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Morgan Memorial Library. All ages are welcome to participate, and students may also earn community service hours through organized volunteer activities.

Attendees will be able to write letters and design cards to urge local and state representatives to keep the environment a priority, Adult Program Services Coordinator Ashley Reed said in a phone interview, along with other opportunities to “craft for a cause” or help library staff prepare for summer programs.

“It’s an opportunity for people to do the DIY-thing with the added benefit of helping somebody,” Reed said, whether it’s making file-folder games for foster kids or toys for the dogs in Suffolk’s “BARKS” program, the Suffolk Humane Society’s reading program in which children to read to dogs in a relaxed, non-judgmental environment.

The litter walk will depart from Morgan Memorial at 11 a.m. to collect garbage and debris downtown. Litter grabbers, safety vests, gloves and bags will be provided. Participants are recommended to bring suitable clothing and footwear.

As of Wednesday evening, the forecast for Suffolk this Saturday includes sunny skies and a high of 89 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

“We’re really excited and we hope to get a good turnout,” Reed said.
