Nansemond River High School seniors Matt Culbert and Jackson Lyons on Wednesday signed to attend Virginia Wesleyan University. Lyons will go to play golf, while Culbert will go to play baseball.
Culbert had been committed for a while and finally signed. He went to a practice last October and then went onto one of VWU’s prospect camps in November. After discussions with the coaches and a couple of visits to the school, Culbert felt like it was the right fit for him.
“The team seemed very close and was very welcoming of me,” he said. “Playing baseball at college has been a long-time goal of mine, and I am looking forward to taking full advantage of the opportunity that Coach Francis and his staff are offering me.”
Culbert toured a couple of other schools but ultimately felt like VWU was the best fit for him. He is looking to try to make an impact in his first season there.
“I hope to make a positive contribution to the team my first year, however I can,” Culbert said. “I think I can bring a versatile component offensively and defensively.”
Lyons, who was the No. 1 player on the Warriors golf team last fall, felt like his recruiting process went well and felt good about his decision to attend VWU. He jokingly mentioned that VWU was his warmest option. The other interest came from Randolph-Macon College and Shenandoah College.
“VWU has had a lot of success there lately, and I felt like I would have a chance to fit in well there.”
Lyons believes with his work ethic, he could become one of the top golfers in all of the NCAA Division II in a couple of years. His last season at NRHS, he finished with an average of 79.5, which was the lowest in the last five years. He shot a career-low 75.
