The Lady Warriors got a big win over one of the best teams in the area on Tuesday.
Whether it is by one point or 50, a win is a win, especially against a very good team. On Tuesday at home, Nansemond River High School softball got a big 2-1 win over Hickory High School, giving Hickory its first loss of the season.
Up 2-0 in the fourth inning, Nansemond River was able to hold on despite a seventh-inning run by Hickory.
Sydney Adcock, Misty Even and Toni Jones all had very good defensive games for the Lady Warriors in their win. Nansemond River is on a four-game win streak that includes wins over quality teams.
“We are very happy with the way we played against them,” Lady Warriors coach Gabe Rogers said. “It was a great game by both teams, and I am very happy with what the girls accomplished. It showed them what they are capable of.”
The Lady Warriors know it took one of their best games to get that win, and they know going forward they are going to have to play softball that way. In the past week, Nansemond River has defeated Lakeland, King’s Fork, Western Branch and Hickory high schools, but they aren’t satisfied. They know just as easily as they have beaten teams, the tables can turn. Rogers knows his team will have to raise their level of play even more as they continue to go through their schedule.
“The Southeastern District is extremely difficult when it comes to softball,” Rogers said. “After getting wins against very good teams, the girls are understanding how important these games are becoming. I think this team is starting to progress to where we thought they could get to, and limiting mistakes has been a big part of that.”
Nansemond River will face Phoebus High School on the road at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
