The Nansemond River High School community has encouraged others to unite in the fight against cancer.
On May 4, several Warriors sports teams will unite in the fight against cancer. The Nansemond River soccer, baseball and softball teams will be in action to bring attention to and raise money for the fight.
Each team will play for a separate cancer cause. The boys’ soccer team will play on behalf brain cancer awareness, and the baseball team will focus on childhood cancer awareness. The softball team will compete for leukemia awareness.
All proceeds that day will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The NRHS community will also sell shirts for the event. The shirts can be ordered now for $5. The shirts will not be here before the event, but the money will be sent to American Cancer Society.
Coach Dustin Tordoff of the boys’ soccer team started thinking about ways to bring awareness to different types of cancer after his mother-in-law was diagnosed with brain cancer. He brought the idea up to Principal Daniel O’Leary, who was immediately on board with the idea. Tordoff talked with the other coaches who will be playing that day, and they also thought it was a good idea. Other members of the Nansemond River High School community have also been very supportive of the idea.
“It was one of those things that all came together,” Tordoff said. “Others in the community have been affected some kind of way by cancer, and we felt like this would be a great event to put together. We want a fun evening filled with educational and financial support for cancer.”
The event will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. All shirt orders can be placed all the way up until April 23 at bit.ly/warriorsunite. There will also be different ways to donate at the event.
