Bon Secours Hampton Roads is once again looking for runners and walkers to help in the ongoing fight against cancer.
The health care company is hosting the eighth annual Bon Secours 5K for Colon Cancer and 1-Mile Fun Walk on March 24 at the Bon Secours Health Center at 5818 Harbour View Blvd. The event will educate racers on colon cancer risks and encourage them to get cancer screenings.
The race raised more than $20,000 last year and has already raised a little more than $18,500 this year, according to Bon Secours spokeswoman Lori Sharp. There are 10 teams already signed up as of Tuesday.
The 1-mile Fun Walk will begin at 8 a.m. and the 5K at 8:30 a.m. Runners will wind through scenic Harbour View neighborhoods, and awards will be given to the fastest teams and the top female and male runners, according to the website. First-place finishers for each age group will also be recognized.
Advance registration is $35 for the 5K and $20 for the 1-mile Fun Walk. The price for registration on race day is $40 and $25, respectively. Racers can sign up in teams of three or more, and each member will receive a $5 registration discount.
Proceeds will be donated to Bon Secours DePaul Health Foundation and Bon Secours Maryview Foundation to help provide care for colon cancer patients.
“It’s a great way for people to come together,” Sharp said in a phone interview. “We have a lot of teams that come out with a cancer survivor and others that are doing it honor someone they lost. It’s a really nice family event.”
