Saints standout senior Erek Smith has committed to play college football at Christopher Newport University.
CNU is close to home and gives Smith the opportunity to continue to play in front of friends and family. His described his recruiting process as informative and fun.
“It was a great experience getting to meet so many new people and going different places,” Smith said. “I really felt at home. The coaches loved me as a player and needed new guys to come in at corner and make an impact, so I am hoping to do that.”
CNU has discussed the possibility of Smith coming in and competing for playing time at the cornerback position, where Smith has excelled in at his time at NSA. As Smith was going over schools during his recruitment process, the biggest thing for him was to go somewhere he was happy and was able to get a good education.
“I plan on coming in and doing my job and working hard,” he said. “If I do that, good things are going to happen.”
While competing at NSA, Smith has been an All-State selection since he was a sophomore. He helped NSA win a state title in 2015. This season, he was an all-state selection at cornerback and as a returner.
