For the second consecutive year, the Lakeland High School boys’ track and field team took the region championship.
The team won its second consecutive indoor regional championship Tuesday afternoon. The Cavs took first place with a team score of 172, which was 69 more points than the second-place team, New Kent High School.
Deondre Little earned first place in two events in the 300-meter dash and the 55-meter dash. He ran a time of 36.07 in the 300 and 6.61 in the 55. Marcus Tucker had finished fourth in the same 55-meter heat as Little and fifth in the 300. Nate Edgehill awarded Lakeland another first-place finish when he took first in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:46.87, and Nicolas Horton finished second right behind him.
Horton and Jeshawn Walker took second and third, respectively, in the 1,600-meter run. However, Walker took first place in the 3,200-meter run. When it came to hurdles, Lakeland had solid performances all the way around. Adrian Block took first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.90, and then he took second in the high jump and third in the triple jump and pole vault.
Lakeland’s 4×800 team was most impressive, as they placed first. That relay was ran by Travis Copeland, Edgehill, Walker and Horton.
“We’re just resting right now, and then we are going to attack the state meet,” Cavs coach Brian Rountree said. “We are going to go as hard as we can go. We got to be able to contend with the some of the top teams that were there from last year.”
“I felt like we were at our best,” Little said. “We have a few things to tweak and work on, but we still had a very good performance.”
With Lakeland winning consecutive Class 3 Region A titles, teams will be looking out for them at the state meet. There were still things Lakeland didn’t show in the region meet that Rountree is hoping to showcase at the state meet.
The Cavs feel the momentum they built at the regional meet should carry over into the state meet next week.
“I tell the guys we are going to go out there and do what we do,” Rountree said. “We know we are the region champs, but we are going to go out there and compete. We don’t want to stop there. Me and my coaches will get together and put together the best plan for preparation over the next few days. We have to take it one event at a time. I’m already excited, and we have a whole week left.”
The Class 3 indoor state meet will be held Feb. 23-24 at Roanoke College.
