A perfect event pairing

Most folks in Suffolk think about heading to the Suffolk Executive Airport only in October, when it’s time to have a festival celebrating a certain legume that is an integral part of our agricultural history.
However, the festival grounds and other parts of the airport can be used far more often than they are, and officials have recognized that in recent years and taken steps to make more use of the property year-round.
At the same time, the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure fundraiser has been looking for a way to expand its event to include more people.
The pairing is perfect, as the Tour de Cure will move this year from King’s Fork High School, which had hosted the event for six years, to the Suffolk Executive Airport.
This year’s Tour de Cure will include not only four cycling routes for those of any endurance level — 12, 30, 63 or 100 miles — but also a 5K run and walk for those who don’t have a bicycle or are feeling less adventurous but still want to support the American Diabetes Association.
The move to include a 5K is a national change but still is a great one for Hampton Roads, where many folks have gotten into walking and running but aren’t avid cyclists. It is also important for the American Diabetes Association to find more opportunities to promote walking and running, which are more accessible forms of exercise than cycling.
The new venue also will allow for an expanded health screening area, where people can learn their risk for diabetes even if they’re not participating in other parts of the event.
Diabetes, especially Type 2, is one of the biggest health crises facing the United States today, and the prevention of Type 2 diabetes — and better management of it for those who already have it — will save many lives. Proper education is crucial, and the American Diabetes Association is working hard on making sure those most at risk have the information they need. The association also is involved in diabetes research as well as advocacy for those with diabetes.
