Lakeland High School boys’ basketball team got a much-needed win against Great Bridge High School Friday.
The Cavs grabbed their third win of the season on the road Friday night against Great Bridge. Keimari Artis had a big game for the Cavs, as he put up 20 points and five rebounds, which led the way in the Cavs’ win. Lakeland set the tone with a 16-4 first quarter.
“I was pleased with our team’s effort out there,” Cavs coach Clint Wright said. “We were able to play strong defense and change our defenses often, which kind of confused Great Bridge as to what we were really doing.”
Lakeland took a 60-36 win, and wins are something Cavs cherish, especially as a young team. To keep his team humble, Wright reminded his players that they only did what was expected of them Friday night.
“I have seen the level these guys play at, and we have to consistently do that for four quarters,” Wright said.
Along with Artis’ performance, Keonte Cobb came off of the bench and provided some valuable minutes for Lakeland both offensively and defensively. He finished the game with 11 points. Artis and Cobb were the only double-digit scorers for the Cavs Friday night.
“We played together, and we played with a lot of energy,” Artis said. “We wanted a win bad, and we knew what we had to do to get one.”
To build on the win going forward, the Cavs want to have a strong week. With only a few games left in the regular season, they want to try to put themselves in the best possible position for the Class 3 Region A playoffs.
“We have a big week ahead of us,” Wright said. “It is important that we come in focus on Monday and let the Great Bridge win show that good things happen when we consistently defend and score.”
Lakeland will face rival Nansemond River High School two times this week. They will host the Warriors at 7 p.m. Tuesday and will head to Nansemond River at 7 p.m. Wednesday for a rescheduled game.
