Lady Cavs standout Kayla Barnes has reached her 1,000th career point.
The Lakeland High School girls’ basketball team has not been on the high end when it comes to wins and losses, but they have had some notable moments this season. Barnes’ accomplishment this week has been a highlight.
It is an accomplishment that Barnes is proud of and had hoped she could reach coming into her senior season.
Against Kellam High School on Monday, she scored 15 points, and her 1,000th point came on a layup after a steal. Afterwards, Barnes said she could not do anything else but smile.
“I was just so excited, because that was something I wanted to accomplish since my freshman year,” she said.
She is the second girl to score 1,000 points at Lakeland. Her coaches and close relatives immediately told Barnes how proud they were of her when the game was over.
With a few games left in the regular season for the Lady Cavs, she will be able to add to her total. From here on out, she wants to focus on continuing to get better while also helping her teammates get better.
Another dream of Barnes’ is to be able to play at the next level after her senior year. Looking at Barnes’ whole body of work, it would be hard to imagine her not being on another hardwood floor once her last year ends at Lakeland. She has been receiving interest from schools and hopes that something can happen soon.
“My goal coming into the season was to improve my game while also helping my teammates get better,” she said. “With this being my last year, I wanted to reach 1,000 points so that I could leave behind examples and goals for the younger members of our team.”
Lakeland will host Great Bridge High School at 7 p.m. Friday.
