Sen. Tim Kaine will be in Suffolk on Friday to announce legislation relating to military spouse unemployment, according to a press release from Kaine’s office.
Kaine will be at the Old Dominion University Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center on University Boulevard to announce new legislation he is introducing to help reduce military spouse unemployment and examine the effects of recurrent moves and reassignments on military spouses’ careers, the release states.
Local military families are welcome to attend the event, the release states. The event will begin at noon.
Kaine will be joined by military family advocates and military spouses, including Lakesha Cole, a military spouse from Portsmouth who was Kaine’s guest at Tuesday’s State of the Union speech.
Military families frequently face financial insecurity due to spousal unemployment, which impacts the overall success of the military, according to the press release from Kaine’s office. Somewhere between 12 and 25 percent of military spouses are unemployed, the release states.
Kaine is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and co-chair of the Senate Military Family Caucus. He is the father of a Marine.
