Residents of Suffolk nursing homes got holiday gifts thanks to charitable Moose men and women.
Suffolk Women of the Moose Lodge Chapter 1315 senior regent Synde Terry and junior graduate regent Lisa Baines brought gift bags to the Concordia Assisted Living—Nansemond Commons and Autumn Care nursing homes on Wednesday.
The ladies distributed 40 bags between the two nursing homes, with 10 men and 10 women served at each one. Bags included sweatshirts, perfumes, colognes, toiletries, chocolates and religious recordings at the request of residents.
“I love these things,” Concordia resident Barbara Bame said as she held slippers and holiday cookies.
Suffolk Moose Lodge No. 141 member David Yeagar Sr. dressed as Saint Nick to hand out gifts at both nursing homes and put smiles on residents’ faces.
“I love doing this,” Yeagar said. “It’s Christmas, and it’s all about making people happy for this time of year.”
Both nursing homes provided lists of residents to the Women of the Moose Lodge that were most in need of holiday cheer.
“It’s a great gesture for the residents, especially for our long-term residents,” said Cristan Hall, Concordia Assisted Living activities director. “It gives them something positive to look forward to and some excitement and joy.”
The annual community service project is made possible through fundraising activities, like Breakfast with Santa, that was held on Dec. 9, Terry said.
“It lets them know that there are people in the community that care about their wellbeing, and helps them enjoy the holidays,” Terry said.
