A local office complex will host a tasty fundraiser for ForKids this Friday.
“Food Truck Friday” will take place at the Suffolk Executive Offices, 425 W. Washington St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Sofrito food truck will be on site to sell lunches, with proceeds going to ForKids to support homeless families.
Justice Green, community manager for Suffolk Executive Offices, said he and Richard Chaing, the owner of the building, met a representative of ForKids during National Night Out in August.
“We were both very impressed but also puzzled, because we had never heard of ForKids,” Green said. “We thought maybe we could help them out as far as publicity and help them become more known amongst the Suffolk area.”
The idea of Food Truck Friday led Green to Sofrito, which specializes in Puerto Rican food. They’ll be right across from City Hall, as well as Morgan Memorial Library and the Suffolk Police Department headquarters, so they hope they’ll draw a lot of city employees to eat lunch as well as residents and workers from the surrounding area.
“We think it’s going to be bigger than what we expect,” Green said, adding they hope about 150 people will come get lunch.
Green said Sofrito’s focus on Puerto Rican food will bring new flavors to Suffolk.
“I think it’s going to bring a unique taste to Suffolk,” Green said. “We don’t have a food truck that’s going to clash with our neighbors.”
Green said if the event goes well, they likely will look at doing it again in the future, perhaps with more food trucks and at a bigger venue.
“It’s going to really stand out,” he said.
