The Tri-River Mudcats 17U team recently completed a successful summer season in which it went 13-2.
The Mudcats, based out of Wakefield, fielded a roster of 17 players representing 11 high schools in the Hampton Roads area. Those schools included Windsor High School, Southampton Academy, Smithfield High School, Isle of Wight Academy, Surry High School, Tabb High School, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Southampton High School, Tidewater Academy, Lakeland High School and King’s Fork High School.
Six out of the 11 players on the roster reside in Suffolk. Ian Mizelle, Brooks Holland and Austin Hay all attend Southampton Academy. James Mullin, an All-State player, attended NSA. Andrew Kelley and Mason Brown attend Lakeland and King’s Fork, respectively.
Coached by the father and son duo of Paul Rogers Jr. and Paul Rogers III along with Robert Scarborough, the team started play in June and completed their season in August. The team competed against Palomino level Pony and various travel teams from the Richmond area, Hampton Roads area and North Carolina.
As the players came from a variety of high school and travel baseball programs, their skills were very diverse and provided an abundance of pitching and fielding options. This compilation of talent afforded the coaches plenty of opportunities to mix and match lineups throughout the season.
Family, coaches and friends all contributed to the success of the Mudcats this summer. The team also received financial support from Wakefield Ruritan Club.
