Warriors’ golf ready to tee off

Nansemond River High School’s golf season starts tomorrow, and the Warriors believe there is plenty to be optimistic about.
Fall sports are now under way, as the golf season is set to get started on Monday. Nansemond River will face Deep Creek High School in the first official match of the season.
Nansemond River will carry a team of six golfers this season. They graduated a couple of golfers from last year’s nine-win team. However, the Warriors also had their No. 1 player from last year transfer schools.
Nonetheless, coach Brandon Frye is confident in his team.
“We are feeling pretty good,” Frye said. “We have all returners coming back, so we have a lot of experience. We should be able to pick up where we left off last year.”
Though this is Frye’s fourth year coaching the Warriors, this is the smallest team he has had. They look to be led by Jackson Lyons. He has been playing in numerous amateur tournaments around Tidewater and has been shooting scores in the 70s.
Frye believes Lyons could be one of the better golfers he has had in the past four years. Lyons’ goal is to reach the state tournament.
Other notable contributors will be Jack Wolfe, Justin McCarthy, Jacob Greening, Tara Grady and Evan Neal. Each player has started a match under Frye and has put up solid numbers.
Frye expects his team to finish with at least as good a record as it had last year.
In the Southeastern District, the Warriors’ biggest threats will be Hickory High School and Grassfield High School.
Since golf starts during summer break, sometimes it can take players to get in a groove and shake off that summer-break rust. Though Frye admits his players hit better scores toward the end of the season, he doesn’t think the Warriors will get off to a slow start.
The Warriors will face Deep Creek tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Bide-A-Wee Golf Course.
