Nansemond River High School’s softball team defeated Kempsville High School Monday to advance to the 5A South regional semifinals.
The Lady Warriors got the job done on a hot and sticky Monday with the 6-3 win. Nansemond River believes they didn’t play as well as they could have but, at the end of the day, the job is to advance.
“We played well enough to win, and at that stage, that’s all that matters,” Lady Warriors coach Gabe Rogers said. “The conditions weren’t that great, but the ladies were able to deal with the challenges in front of them and get the win.”
It is always a team effort each time Nansemond River steps on the field, but Megan Wilson hit a huge two-run home run for the team. It gave the team 5-2 lead and added some breathing room for the Lady Warriors to hold off Kempsville for the win.
Nansemond River will now face Menchville High School for the third time this season in the 5A South semifinals Wednesday. In their last meeting in the PenSouth tournament championship, Menchville knocked off No. 1 seeded Lady Warriors 8-0.
In order to be successful, Rogers feels his team just needs to stay consistent in what they do as a team.
“We are doing really well with our at-bats and are staying aggressive,” he said. “Defensively, we are doing a good job prohibiting the big inning from happening. We have to make sure we are not making errors so that a big inning doesn’t happen against us.”
Nansemond River will face Menchville at Princess Anne High School today at 5 p.m.
“We are extra excited for this next game and what it has in store for us,” Lady Warriors pitcher Madie Rhoads said.
