Chase Lewis was voted Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of The Week after going 4-4 with two runs and two RBIs in a 13-0 shut out win over Phoebus High School.
Lewis is a senior member of the Lakeland High School baseball team. They’re currently on a three-game winning streak, the longest of the year. The senior’s play has had a hand in helping the Cavs catch fire recently.
“Lately the team has started to come together more,” Lewis said. “In doing so, it has allowed us to win a few games here recently.”
Being voted player of the week was an honor for Lewis. He is thankful for the support and confidence he has received from family, friends and coaches this season. His team-high four hits in a 13-0 shutout win against Phoebus put him in position to be recognized.
“I was extremely satisfied with my performance all around, defensively and offensively,” Lewis said. “It was a great night for myself and for my team.”
Lewis has been playing solid baseball all year long, but said he didn’t have any special expectations this year. He just wanted to go out each day and play his hardest, while having fun doing it. Everything else, such as being named first-team All-Conference, is a plus.
The Lakeland senior is passionate about baseball. He prides himself on doing the things on the field that are needed to get the job done.
Lewis is motivated to play the way he does by the memory of his grandfather, who passed away a year and a half ago and always wanted Lewis to be the best of the best. He was unable to attend his high school career games but always looked forward to hearing his grandson’s accomplishments from each game.
“Personally I strive to be the best of the best on the diamond, like my grandad wanted me to do,” Lewis said. “Not only that, but I also want to be a player younger guys can look up to.”
While working his way toward fulfilling his grandfather’s wishes, Lewis gets support from his family. They inspire him by always having his back, no matter the situation, and always pushing him to go above and beyond.
As a senior, Lewis has been assuming a leadership role for his team. He experienced as a freshman how seniors encouraged the underclassmen, and he has taken that same approach. As one of the team captains, the senior leads by example as much as he can.
Lewis looks up to former New York Yankee Derek Jeter because of the way Jeter carried himself on and off the field and the way he approached the game.
When Lewis has spare time, he enjoys hunting for deer and ducks. He also enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and friends. Before the senior’s first at-bat before each game, he says a prayer.
So far, Lewis has not committed to playing college baseball, but if the opportunity presents itself that could change.
Lewis and the Cavs are currently getting prepared for the post-season.
