A mighty wind is headed to the campus of Paul D. Camp Community College.
College President Dan Lufkin announced on Tuesday that the college’s new baseball and softball teams will be called the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes won the second round of online community voting, with a total of 386 votes. In second place was the Fighting Lumberjacks with 340 votes, with the Fighting Pinecones finishing third with 79 votes.
“What I’ve enjoyed most about this whole process is the community involvement and engagement,” Lufkin said. “That’s why we did this the way we did. It’s something they [students] can be proud of. When students come to Paul D. Camp, they can now say they’re a Hurricane.”
He added that plans to begin renovating the college’s Franklin baseball field are already under way. He expects construction to begin by mid-June and to be completed in time for the fall semester.
“We should have a coach named within the next week,” he said. “One of their first priorities will be to start on the design and upgrades to the field.”
Additionally, the college plans to involve the community in the design of the team’s logo. Lufkin said he expects the college eventually to set up a process by which people can vote for the final logo choice.
