The Driver community will welcome visitors this weekend with products by Hampton Roads artisans.
The first Driver Village Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday on the lot of the Twisted Art and More shop, 3117 Kings Highway. The handcrafted art and antiques market is being organized by Twisted Art and More with help from Arthur’s General Store.
Fifteen vendors have signed up for the event as of Tuesday, Twisted Art and More owner Pam English said. Fifty-two artisans based in Hampton Roads rent space in her store, and many of them will be at the market.
“We wanted to do an event to bring attention and awareness to Driver,” English said. “We thought people would respond well to an outdoor market.”
Artisans will have products made from repurposed materials and antique items. Jewelry, home décor and bird feeders will be available. Popular products are beach-themed with starfish, sand dollars, mermaid and crab imagery.
“We add the old with the new and make it something different,” Twisted Art and More vendor Katie Gray said.
Arthur’s General Store will provide lunch and beverages, and proceeds will benefit the Driver Volunteer Fire Department.
The market is one of the community efforts to raise awareness about Driver and its offerings.
“I’ve had people come in that had no idea Driver even existed, and they grew up close by,” English said.
She said events such as Driver Days do a great job of bringing attention to these shops. She opened hers in September 2016, before the annual fall festival.
“Driver Days is phenomenal. It really introduced me to the public this past fall,” she said. “I just think it’s important to have events that draw people in.”
She hopes to organize similar events throughout the year, depending on the success of Driver Village Market. “Come on out,” she said.
