Suffolk man charged after chase, crash

A Suffolk man was arrested Wednesday after police say he led them on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash.

The Southampton Sheriff’s Office received a call about 7:15 p.m. about a red Chevrolet Corvette driving recklessly westbound near Armory Drive on Southampton Parkway, according to a press release from Maj. G.H. Drewery of the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

A Courtland Police Department unit observed the Corvette near the Story Station Road area. It got behind the vehicle and started making evasive maneuvers, speeding up and changing lanes, according to the press release.

A Southampton Sheriff’s unit joined the chase near Old Bridge Road. The Corvette then turned off Southampton Parkway south on Old Bridge Road into the mobile home community. The Corvette then headed back to Southampton Parkway and headed east, according to the press release.

The Corvette hit a vehicle at the intersection of South Quay Road and O’Kelly Drive in Suffolk. The driver, according to the press release, stopped and jumped from the vehicle near the overpass of Dutch Road. Southampton deputies apprehended him after a foot pursuit.

Alton Worley, 42, of Skeetertown Road, is charged with felony hit and run, reckless driving, felony eluding and third-offense driving under the influence. He is set for arraignment on Friday.

One person was transported to the hospital from the crash, which is being investigated by Suffolk Police Department.
