Touch a truck in Driver next weekend

Suffolk children will be able to get a closer look at some impressive vehicles next weekend.
The Driver Volunteer Fire Department and Driver Merchants Association are holding the second annual Touch A Truck at Driver Village. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 15, kids will enjoy games, prizes and more than a dozen local service vehicles.
“It’s kind of our way of giving back to the community,” Driver Merchants Association member Terri Moore said.
Suffolk Public Works will provide nine of the vehicles, according to DVFD administrative assistant Michael Savi, such as a plow. Suffolk Fire and Rescue will bring its command bus, Nansemond Lawn and Garden Inc. will have one of its bulldozers, and even more vehicles will be available for kids to enjoy.
“Being up close and personal with these vehicles you see on the road is what the kids enjoy the most,” Savi said.
The North Suffolk Circle of CHKD will sell burgers and hotdogs. Kids will be able to run around in big inflatable “knocker balls” and bounce off each other.
Every visitor will receive a raffle ticket for a Walmart trampoline designed for ages 6 to 12 years old, and every purchase from a Driver merchant will come with another ticket.
“The door prize is something new we’re doing this year,” Savi said.
The event drew more than 400 attendees last year, according to Savi, and he expects a comparable turnout this year, and even more vehicles than the previous year.
“We have a lot of vehicles kids are going to be interested in looking into,” he said.
