Two dead in crash

A crash on Route 258 near Route 189, in Southampton County just over the city line, claimed two lives on Wednesday, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

The crash happened just before 6:25 a.m.

Anaya stated a 2006 Ford F-350 ran off the roadway into the trees and caught fire. The driver and one passenger died, and the medical examiner’s office will make positive identification. Both are males, Anaya stated.

A third passenger, John Futrell, 64, of Murfreesboro, N.C., suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

The Virginia State Police reconstruction team was called to investigate the accident. The crash is still under investigation.

The northbound and southbound lanes were both closed for part of the day. The crash was cleared and lanes reopened before 12:45 p.m.
