Suffolk native Matt Holt helped La Salle University’s baseball team to its first win of the season over Wofford College Tuesday.
Holt is a 2016 graduate of Nansemond River and was a vital member of its state championship team last year. Holt signed to continue his baseball career at LaSalle University. Holt, a pitcher, recently got his first start of the year on March 7 and helped the Explorers to their first win of the season. His previous three appearances were out of the bullpen.
La Salle defeated Wofford 7-6 Tuesday night. Holt struck out six batters during five innings of pitching. He also allowed only two earned runs and walked zero batters. In four games, he has 10 strikeouts. He made his first appearance on the mound this year in a relief role for La Salle against Butler, in which he pitched four innings.
Matt’s father, Robert Holt, and the rest of his family were excited about his first start.
“I obviously was both very nervous and proud,” Robert Holt said. “My wife and I, and his maternal grandparents watching in Kalamazoo, Mich., were all on the edge of our seats. Matthew looked calm, cool and collected as he fanned the first two batters that he faced. At that point, it looked like he had his stuff, and his team’s bats had finally come to life and supported him with 14 hits over the evening.”
During his senior year at Nansemond River, Holt was an all-conference and second-team all-region player. He was also a first-team all-conference player at pitcher and first base his junior year.
Holt is scheduled to start again in the team’s home opener against Villanova on Tuesday.
