After winning the 3A East regional indoor track and field championship, Lakeland High School had solid performances in the state meet last Friday and Saturday.
The Cavs traveled to Roanoke College last weekend to participate in the state meet. Though they were unable to come away with the championship, the Cavs were able to put up solid performances throughout the weekend.
The Cavs’ 4×400 relay team was impressive, as they placed first in the state with a time of 3:31.77. Donell Blount, Alphonso Randolph, Teshun Pierre and Darren Daughtrey made up the 4×400 team that placed first in the state. The 4×200 relay team placed fifth in the state.
Individually, Daughtrey had a solid performance in the 55-meter hurdle, placing third in the state. He also placed seventh and had a personal record of 20-03.75 in the long jump.
Deondre Little, who in the regional meet set the record for the 300-meter dash, was unable to compete at full strength due to a knee injury. Little was supposed to be a part of the 4×200 relay team, but changes had to be made due to his injury.
“Deondre was upset he couldn’t compete like he wanted to because of his injury,” Cavs track coach Brian Rountree said. “Those guys rallied around him, though, and were able to be state champions in the 4×400. It was great to see. It was good to see them adjust to adversity.”
For the girls who went to state, Loren Biggs placed fourth in the 55-meter dash and the long jump. All Lakeland participants in the state meet were recognized for All-State except for Little, due to his injury.
Rountree will give his team a little time to recover before starting outdoor season practice. He is excited about what Lakeland can build off of after a solid indoor season that included a regional championship.
“We learned some things about ourselves in the indoor season,” Rountree said. “We want to learn where our strengths are and carry that over into the outdoor season.”
The first outdoor meet for Lakeland will be March 29 at Grassfield High School. It will be the first Southeastern District meet.
