Nansemond River High School’s girls’ basketball team took over first place in the Conference 10 standings after their home win against Hampton High School on Friday night.
The Lady Warriors hosted their ninth annual Hoop for a Cure game against Hampton on Friday. It was a big game for many reasons. Not only was the game dedicated to breast cancer awareness, but it was also a matchup between the two top teams in the conference.
Nansemond River came out on top with a 41-44 victory. The win gives the Warriors 12 wins for the season and places them as the top team in the Conference 10 standings.
“We played physical the entire game,” the Lady Warriors’ Cassidy Simmons said. “We came out ready to play from the start. Everybody played their part and then some. Overall we could have played a bit better, but I’m very proud of my team.”
“It was a tough game, but we all played like a team and shared the ball like we were supposed to,” Briana Autrey said. “Whenever we saw a teammate down, we picked each other up as we should have. We stayed disciplined to what our coaches were telling us all week.”
The Lady Warriors were clearly excited about the win and what it will do for them going forward.
“From the beginning of the season this is what we said we wanted to do,” Autrey said. “The feeling of getting that done is great, but we still have work to do.”
The Lady Warriors will take on Kecoughtan High School on the road Tuesday at 7 p.m.
