Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s girls’ basketball team went on the road Friday evening and got a 63-12 win over Steward School.
The Lady Saints are on a three-game winning streak. NSA’s performance was impressive on many counts. Due to the snow storm last week, the Lady Saints had a game canceled, and while school was out, they couldn’t practice either. In a limited week, the Lady Saints were able to secure a big win.
“We came out well and defensively we did a good job getting in the passing lanes,” Lady Saints coach Kim Aston said. “We did a good job creating turnovers, and offensively we came out shooting the ball extremely well.”
A 51-point win bodes well for the Lady Saints confidence. The win puts the Lady Saints at 5-6 on the season. NSA shot an astounding near-50 percent from the field and hit on 40 percent of their three-pointers. Kelly Hogan led the way with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Lindsay Knierbein was the second leading scorer with 11 points for the Lady Saints.
“This game was definitely a confidence builder,” Knierbein said. “We had a game plan, and we executed it. We were able to get everyone involved, and that’s always good.”
“We communicated really well out there, and it was a team effort,” the Lady Saints’ Logan Harrell said. “Our scoring was pretty evenly spread, which showed how it took all of us to keep such a significant lead and come back home with a win.”
Aston was able to get all of her players involved, which is always a positive in a dominant win. In the First Colonial game, the starters played all of the minutes. The basketball was distributed well, as the Lady Saints finish the game with 17 assists.
“Our willingness to be unselfish and share the ball was great in this game,” Aston said. “We had 17 assists as a team, which means everyone was involved.”
Defensively, the Lady Saints did not allow Steward School to score more than four points in any quarter. At halftime, the Lady Saints were up 37-4.
Next week, the Lady Saints has three games slated, including a makeup game against Tallwood High School that was supposed to have been played on Jan. 11. The Lady Saints are getting into the conference section of their schedule and feel they can go into next week with some momentum.
The Lady Saints play Norfolk Collegiate School at home Tuesday. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
