In the middle of frigid weather, an Isle of Wight sheriff’s deputy warmed the hearts of one Carrollton couple with a kind gesture.

Katie Boutwell, 79, and her husband, Ken Boutwell, 88, didn’t have any heat in their home when she called 911. Their heat had gone out several days before, and the company they called performed a temporary fix while awaiting a part for repair. The fix only lasted one night.

With the temperature in their home at 58 degrees, Katie Boutwell was at her wit’s end.

“I didn’t know what to do,” she said.

Boutwell called 911 hoping she could be put in touch with the local gas company. Dispatchers sent Deputy Jeremy Hall to their residence in the 13000 block of Prince Andrew Trail to check on the couple.

After his original visit, Hall left and called his wife, Josie Hall, who is a Suffolk police officer.

“I’d want somebody to do something if it was my grandparents,” Deputy Hall said. “We decided we would get them a heater and two heating blankets.”

Hall returned to the home about an hour later with the space heater and two electric blankets he had purchased at a local store with his own money.

The Boutwells tried to pay Hall for the items, but he refused.

“I couldn’t believe he had done that. I was floored,” Boutwell said. “It’s just heartwarming to have somebody try to do something for you. It kept us nice and toasty.”

Boutwell said her heat is back in operating order now.

Hall didn’t seek any recognition for what he had done, but Sheriff Mark Marshall later received a voice mail from the thankful couple, informing him of Hall’s act of kindness.

Hall said he was glad he and his wife were able to help the Boutwells out.

“I’m just glad I was in the right place at the right time,” he said. “I’m just grateful that my wife and I are blessed enough to be in a position that when we do encounter people like this through work, we’re able to help them.”

Boutwell said she and her husband were grateful and touched by Hall’s gesture.

“He was wonderful,” Katie Boutwell said. “He was an angel arriving in a policeman’s outfit.”
