Lakeland High School’s girls’ basketball team picked up its second win of the season Friday, beating Indian River 45-32.
Friday’s win helped the Lady Cavs finish the week at 1-1.
“We started off really slow,” LHS coach Brandey Blunt said. “The girls got it together and were able to hold on. Indian River is a fighting team. They fought until the end. I was very proud of the girls, especially in the second half.”
Deja Freeman scored 10 points and had eight rebounds and four blocks for the Lady Cavs. Kayla Barned added 12 points, eight assists and four steals. Amari Mason had nine points for Lakeland.
“After halftime, everything clicked for them,” Blunt said. “In the first half we weren’t talking or communicating, but everything changed in the second half. We didn’t depend on one person. Everyone on the roster scored, which is always good.”
After graduating marquee players from last year and having one of their best players transfer, the Lady Cavs have been regrouping for much of the season. After last year’s winning season their current 2-10 record has been disappointing.
“We lost some key pieces from last year’s team,” Blunt said. “For much of the season, the girls have been regrouping and rebuilding. The girls are working hard and have been dealing with it well.”
Next for the Lady Cavs is a rivalry game against Nansemond River at home on Tuesday, weather permitting.
