Suffolk Treasurer Ronald H. Williams hosted his 21st annual Treasurer’s United Way Golf Tournament on Sept. 16 at the Nansemond River Golf Course. The tournament is the city’s premier fundraiser for the United Way of South Hampton Roads.

The tournament drew more than 90 players from Suffolk and the surrounding community and began with a $500 raffle ticket helicopter golf ball drop, which was won by Joe Dalton from the Beamon and Johnson/NAPA team and donated back to the tournament. Hampton Roads Helicopters provided the flight for Williams again this year.

The winner of the putting contest was Ryan Wilson, while Kevin Williamson had the longest drive on the 18th hole.

To date, the tournament has raised approximately $370,000 for the United Way of South Hampton Roads, and next year’s event has already been planned for Sept. 15.

Suffolk organizations that will benefit from the tournament’s proceeds include the Genieve Shelter, American Cancer Society, Boys and Girls Club, Salvation Army, Western Tidewater Free Clinic, Meals on Wheels, Wounded Warriors, Suffolk Crime Line, Suffolk Education Foundation, the Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk and the Suffolk Sickle Cell Association.

Chick-fil-A, Panera Bread, Subway, Cardinal Vending and Pepsi donated food and beverages to the event. Primary sponsors included Farmers Bank, Davenport and Company, the Brooks Law Firm, Communications Specialists Inc., Virginia Auction Company, Dominion Virginia Power, CH2MHILL, Kimley-Horn & Associates, Michael Baker Inc. and RK&K.

“I am pleased with the success we had for this year’s tournament, and am thankful to all of those who helped make it possible,” Williams said. “I look forward to seeing everyone again next year.”
