Local Girl Scouts become artists for the day

Nearly 75 girls traveled to the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast headquarters on Oct. 22 to participate in Art Explorers with Young Audiences of Virginia.
Kim Herman, traveling artist for Young Audiences and the lead facilitator for YAV, is a former Girl Scout who is currently a troop leader.
“This has been great fun,” she said. “I get to work with a group I already have a relationship with and totally understand, such as the art badges they can earn in each Girl Scout level.”
Throughout the morning, girls were involved in a variety of activities that helped them learn about different art forms, including how to draw landscapes and portraits, as well as painting basics.
“Understanding everyone is an artist when they put their own creativity to their work is a huge confidence builder,” said Cindy Aitken, an artist with Young Audiences. “This gives them the opportunity to reflect on who they are and what they would like to become.”
