A local ministry will hold an event next Saturday to give back to the community, especially to children.
“I Am My Brother’s Keeper” is designed to show the community that we are all one, said Tonya Bishop.
“We’re talking about accountability and letting kids know the decisions you make not only affect you but also affect people around you, your family and your community,” Bishop said. “It’s important to have a brotherhood or a sisterhood, where you’re not just responsible for yourself and your actions but to help somebody else too.”
The event is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Oddfellows Lodge, 131 Tynes St. It is presented by PRAY Ministries and sponsored by the Oddfellows and Revelations 4:4-5.
There will be food and fun activities, Bishop said. School supplies and bookbags will be given away, and there will be motivational speakers and a presentation from the Suffolk Police Department about child safety and gang awareness.
“We are expecting from 150 to 200 kids,” Bishop said. The event is in its fifth year.
Bishop said helping kids and the community through events like this is her passion.
“I love the kids and I love giving back, but I also love being able to show them that you have help where it’s needed and no matter where you are, your current situation doesn’t have to be your final destination,” she said.
Bishop said children will be motivated to look for ways to be a hero at home rather than aspiring only to professional sports or being a celebrity.
“You can do other things to be a celebrity in your own home or in your own city,” she said.
Donations of school supplies can be accepted at the event or given ahead of time by calling 347-1290. More information can also be obtain by emailing prayministries19@gmail.com.
