A unique event for Suffolk

So you’re tired of the same old thing? Looking to inject a little mystery into your life?
Well, well. You’re in luck, as the Suffolk Mystery Authors Festival returns Aug. 13 for its third appearance. If it were a book series, it would be a trilogy with an opening for the publisher to extend it indefinitely. Which would be the deal of a lifetime for many of the 30 or so authors who will be on hand, not to mention their fans.
In fact, this year’s festival will be a bit broader in scope and appeal than the first two, as it has been expanded to include a few writers of suspense, paranormal, romance and women’s fiction. There may not be “something for everybody,” but there’s sure to be something for nearly every pulp fiction appetite.
Also new this year is a new author expo during the event, which will allow fans of the genre to discover the next generation of writers and snap up their books before everyone else discovers them.
There will be plenty of opportunity for fans to meet the participating authors, along with book signings and a few interesting workshops and panel discussions, with topics ranging from animal themes in mysteries to reading like a writer.
The festival is a partnership among Suffolk Tourism, the Suffolk Public Library and the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, a combination of talents and interests whose confluence marks the sweet spot for this type of event. This is truly something different in Suffolk, and it will one day be among the things that folks around the region think of first when they think of the city.
Join the fun this year. The one-day festival lasts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. The event is free, except for a VIP meet-and-greet from noon to 1 p.m., which is limited to the first 100 reservations. The meet-and-greet costs $20 and includes light refreshments and a swag bag. Reservations can be made by calling 514-4130.
