The Nansemond River High School softball team placed three players on the Virginia High School League 5A All-State Softball Team.
Lauren Davis, Jaclyn Mounie and Lauren Maddrey all made all-state. Davis and Mounie received first-team honors, and Maddrey earned second-team placement.
Coach Gabe Rogers was thrilled to hear that his girls had been awarded.
“It’s a testament to the hard work that these girls have put in,” Rogers said. “Obviously as a coach you’re proud when any girls are recognized for what they’ve done on the field, and I really think the girls are deserving of that honor.”
Jaclyn Mounie plays second base and is a two-time all-state first-team honoree. Rogers describes her as a tremendous softball player with an amazing work ethic.
“She’s just a hard working kid that never settles, she never stops,” he said.
Rogers described first-base player Lauren Davis as being determined and strong.
“Lauren is an extremely gifted player who is very strong and athletic, who has a great knack for softball,” Rogers said. “She’s also a great hitter, a great defensive player and a real treat to have the past three years.”
Lauren Maddrey played pitcher and dominated the season. She hurt her knee during the regular season and didn’t get much post-season play but was still recognized for her hard work.
“I think it’s just fantastic that the coaches recognized what a good season she did have and making second team all-state is a fantastic run, and I’m very happy for her,” Rogers said.
All three players were seniors this year. Rogers believes their presence on the field will be missed.
“We had seven seniors on our team this year, and we’re going to miss all of them very much,” he said.
Rogers has not spoken with the girls to congratulate them yet but says that’s something he is definitely going to do.
“The relationship I have with all these girls is very unique and even though I haven’t talked to them yet, I will talk to them to make sure that they know how proud I am of them,” he said.
