The Lakeland High School boys baseball team capitalized on a strong start to beat Booker T. Washington High School 11-2 Friday evening.
The Cavaliers scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back to secure the win.
Coach David Devers sees this as an opportunity for his team, which has been through a lot in the season.
“It’s been a growing season for us,” Devers said. “We have two seniors and I am proud of them and everyone.”
Devers feels like it is the right time to see what his team is made of.
“I like that we can play different conferences,” he said. “It’s a change and allows us to see other teams and how they play.”
Against Booker T. Washington, the Cavaliers saw a few players stand out. Chase Lewis went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored twice.
Devers often brought up the seniors and their passion for the game in good times and bad.
“We’ve got a young team,” Devers said. “This is a learning experience that is good for them, but if I had to say anything it would be to the seniors. I would like to thank them for their commitment.”
Lakeland plays I.C. Norcom High School on Monday, giving them another chance to see if they can pull off a victory. But Devers enjoys playing within his district because it breeds competition.
“Playing Southeastern District schools is good to go against,” he said.
