Shoppers can go to the Walmart Supercenter in North Suffolk for free, curbside grocery delivery to their cars next week.

Effective April 20, customers at the Walmart, at 6259 College Drive, can order their groceries online, reserve a pickup time and have an employee deliver and load the bags into their vehicles.

The North Suffolk Walmart is one of four Hampton Roads stores launching the pickup service. It will also be available at the 24-hour supercenters at 12401 Jefferson Ave., Newport News; 2012 Lynnhaven Parkway, Virginia Beach; and 632 Grassfield Parkway, Chesapeake.

According to Walmart’s website, customers placing their online grocery orders — either at walmart.com/grocery or through Wal-Mart’s mobile app — set a specific pickup time. A Walmart personal shopper will have orders ready before the pickup times. When customers pull into the special parking area and call a posted phone number to advise of their arrival, an employee will bring the order and load it in the car’s trunk.

Despite the convenience, most of a handful of customers going into the College Drive Walmart Friday doubted they would use the pickup service.

It’s nice to know it’s available if she needs it, said Betty Babb of Portsmouth.

“But I like to get out and walk through the store,” said Babb, packing groceries into her trunk. She also prefers to pick out her own fresh produce, fruits and meats.

Even with an infant daughter in tow, Jeanette West of Portsmouth wants to hit the store.

“I like to see what I’m buying,” she said, and it gives her the flexibility to pick up things she forgot to put on her list.

Although he will probably try the service, Nelson Barnes of Suffolk said he doesn’t expect to stop going into the store.

“I can see where it would be convenient if you are in a rush and don’t want to have to wait, like around the holidays,” said Siara Davis of Portsmouth. “I’ll probably still go into the store.”
