Relay to hold ‘Round Robin’

A new event on Monday will help people who are unfamiliar with the Suffolk Relay for Life get to know what it’s all about.

The “Relay Round Robin” will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. at King’s Fork High School, 351 Kings Fork Road. Eight stations will be available for people to learn about different aspects of Relay.

“Some people don’t know Relay exists, or they don’t know what it’s all about,” said Dana DeFreeuw, the People Lead for Relay for Life. “It’s also to draw in some people from the community that maybe haven’t been to Relay in a long time or haven’t been at all.”

This is the 21st year for the Suffolk Relay, and DeFreeuw said the event is looking for more attendance and involvement.

At least some of that may come from people who are new to the area, she said.

“We have an influx of military and new folks coming in that may not know that we have one,” she said. “We’re trying to get the word out that Relay is here.”

Stations at Monday’s event will include committee, survivor/caregiver, day of event, sponsorship, fundraising and luminaria.

“We’ll have stations set up that give you little pieces of the different aspects of Relay,” DeFreeuw said. “They can make a decision at the end of the evening maybe to join a team or create their own team.”

How to register a team, how to plan a fundraiser and how to volunteer on the day of the event also will be discussed.

Experienced Relayers are welcome, too, and might learn something new. At the committee station, they can learn about committees and perhaps join one.

Visitors who go to all eight stations will get a free Relay T-shirt, DeFreeuw said. One of the rolled-up T-shirts will have a hidden $100 team credit, which puts the team $100 ahead on fundraising without actually raising the money.

Relay for Life will be held this year from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning May 20 at Nansemond River High School. The theme this year is based on Dr. Seuss: “Cancer: Not here, not there, not anywhere.”
