Championship season is upon the Nansemond River High School indoor track and field team, but senior star Brandeé Johnson helped get her team primed for it with her standout performances in the recent Virginia Tech Premier High School Invitational.
Johnson set a new meet record at the event with her 7.82-second time in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles. She matched the old record from 2005 — 7.95 seconds — in the preliminary heat, providing a hint of what was coming in the final.
Senior Breanne Bygrave of Wakefield High School in Raleigh, N.C. was right behind Johnson in both the prelim and the final, finishing in 8.14 seconds and 7.86 seconds, respectively.
In the girls’ 500-meter dash, Johnson finished in one minute and 12.88 seconds, a time that gave her the win and easily beat the qualifying times for the New Balance Nationals and the 3A through 6A state championship meets.
Lady Warriors junior Syaira Richardson beat all of those qualifying times, as well, with her 1:14.48 time that put her in third.
Nansemond River produced three other top 10 finishes during the invitational, including the girls’ 4×400-meter relay team that took fourth with a time of 3:55.58 that easily beat all of the qualifying times listed.
The 4×400 team featured seniors Morgan Towe and Amirah Jones, freshman Kori Carter and Syaira Richardson.
Carter placed eighth in the girls’ 300-meter dash with a 6A state-qualifying time of 40.39 seconds.
The Lady Warriors’ 4×200-meter relay team took ninth with a time of 1:45.22, which beat all of the qualifying times listed.
Nansemond River competed in the PenSouth Conference championships on Thursday in Hampton, with the Region 5A South championships set for Feb. 12 and 13 at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton.
