Toys collected in Driver

The Driver Ruritan Club is helping Toys for Tots collect toys this year, and it has Driver covered with collection boxes at the three churches in Driver.

“This is our third year for doing this,” said Les Ward, communications director of the church. “It’s just one of the civic duties we do for the community each year. We’ve been pretty successful in the past in collecting toys.”

Ward said the Driver Ruritan Club does a lot to support the local Scouting organizations as well as the Suffolk Humane Society, which has its office in Driver.

“But we like to do a little bit more,” Ward said.

The toys will be collected through Dec. 2, which is the club’s regular December meeting, at which time they’ll be presented to the Salvation Army.

“We encourage the public to support it,” Ward said. “The more toys, the better.”

The public is invited to bring toys to the churches. They don’t have to be a member or even attending service.

“There’s always somebody at all three churches most days and nights,” Ward said, due to the number of organizations that meet in the churches. He said any Ruritan Club member, church member or Scout member will be glad to help get the toys to the collection boxes.

The boxes are located at the following churches:

  • Beech Grove United Methodist Church, 4251 Driver Lane
  • Berea Christian Church, 4109 Driver Lane
  • Glebe Episcopal Church, 4400 Nansemond Parkway

Also helping support Toys for Tots is the Suffolk News-Herald’s Cheer Fund.
