Barbara Haynes Francis

Barbara Haynes Francis, 88, passed away on Nov. 16, 2015, at The Chesapeake. Born in Suffolk on May 26, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hunter McGuire Haynes, of Suffolk. She was a resident of Hampton from 1953 to 2003 and then moved into The Chesapeake Retirement Community in Newport News in late 2003.
Mrs. Francis attended Sullins Junior College in Bristol and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Elon University. A former elementary school teacher, she taught in the Waynesboro, Suffolk and Hampton school systems. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Hampton, the Progressive Sunday School Class there, and the Charlotte Hudgins Circle. She was a charter member of the Riverdale Garden Club, Hampton, a past member of the Junior Woman’s Club of Hampton and a long term member of the Woman’s Club of Hampton.
Survivors include her husband of more than 62 years, Ernest Clifton Francis Jr.; two sons, Dr. Hunter Clifton Francis and his wife, Donna and Dr. Scott Haynes Francis and his wife, Winifred; three granddaughters, Alison Averill Sheppard and her husband, Larry, Catherine Scott Westphal and her husband, Michael, and Courtney Dail Francis; four great-grandchidren, Wyatt Ernest Sheppard, Charlotte Averill Sheppard, Emma Grace Westphal, and Jackson Hunter Westphal.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, from 5 to 7 p.m. at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Holly Lawn Cemetery, 1525 N. Main St., Suffolk. A memorial service will be held at The Chesapeake Retirement Community on Saturday at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Central United Methodist Church, 225 Chapel St., Hampton, VA 23669 or to the Benevolent Fund, c/o The Chesapeake, 955 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601.
The family expresses sincere appreciation for the loving care and attention Barbara received while a patient in the Memory Support and Health Care units of The Chesapeake Retirement Community over the last six years.
