Radio-controlled aircraft of all shapes and sizes will take to the skies during the Hampton Roads Radio Control Club’s annual Fun Fly in support of Suffolk’s Toys for Tots program on Saturday at the club’s Lone Star Lakes airfield off Pembroke Lane.

The Hampton Roads Radio Control Club is kicking off the holiday season next weekend with its annual Fun Fly.

The landing fee for pilots is $10 or a toy for Toys for Tots. All radio-controlled aircraft, big or small, are welcome.

“Our main purpose is to raise money and toys for Toys for Tots,” said Mills Staylor, a member of the club. “We’re hoping for a pretty day.”

Spectators also are welcome to bring a toy or cash donation.

“Last year, we had four complete, big boxes of toys, and the weather wasn’t even that good,” Staylor said. Last year’s check was for about $3,000, he added.

“We’re looking forward to giving the local kiddies some toys and money that can be used to buy additional toys.”

The Nov. 7 event will be held at the club’s field off Pembroke Lane in Lone Star Lakes Park.

New this year, day and night sessions will be held. The day session lasts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a pilots’ meeting at 9. Awards and prizes will be given at 3.

The night session begins with a pilots’ meeting at 3 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m.

“Some of these fellows can put these lights on the planes and fly them in the dark,” Staylor said. “That will be going on after dark.”

The same landing fee is in effect for the night session.

Refreshments will be available for purchase throughout the day.
