Rotarians prepare oyster roast

Prepare to slurp down some seafood at the Rotary Club of North Suffolk’s 12th annual oyster roast on Oct. 28 from 3 to 6 p.m.
“It has a hometown, warm atmosphere,” said Josh West, current board member and immediate past president of the North Suffolk Rotary Club. “Everybody’s there to have a good time.” Along with oysters, there will be beer, wine and entertainment, including a performance by a local bluegrass band, for guests to enjoy throughout the evening.
“It’s a good way to see Rotarians working to benefit our community,” West said of the fundraiser. The oyster roast raises money for organizations in the community, West said. Some of the many organizations they support include Stop Hunger Now, the Roc Solid Foundation and the Nansemond River High School Future Business Leaders of America, West said.
A new feature of the event this year will be a station set up for guests to get their pinky fingernail painted purple for $5, West said. The money raised at this booth will go to Rotary International’s polio fund, which supports the eradication of polio around the globe, a main charitable focus of Rotary International.
Usually, the roast draws a crowd of around 300 to 400 people, West said. It costs $30 to attend, and will take place at Kirk Farm, located on Everets Road. The evening will consist of socializing during the first hour, with the oyster feast following.
The Rotary Club of North Suffolk is always interested in finding ways they can help in the community, West said. Anyone interested in joining can learn more at www.northsuffolkrotary.org. Meetings are on Fridays at 7:30 a.m. at Cedar Point Country Club.
