The Lakeland High School boys’ volleyball team was in a close match with visiting I.C. Norcom for one set Thursday but otherwise got a comfortable win to open its conference schedule. The Cavaliers prevailed in straight sets, 25-6, 25-22, 25-10.
“Overall, it was OK for our conference,” Cavaliers coach Tarijuana Napoleon said of her team’s performance. “I think the boys could have played a lot better than they did.”
As for what ultimately decided the match, she said it was “definitely our service. We had 23 aces overall.”
Opposite/middle blocker Noah Colyer led the way for Lakeland with eight of those aces.
Cavaliers middle hitter Josh Bennett had 11 kills, and setter Kyle Stuart finished with 21 assists.
Lakeland is in a new conference this season — Conference 27 — following its move down to the Virginia High School League’s Group 3A classification, but Napoleon did not come into this matchup unfamiliar with Norcom.
“I knew from last year their level of play, so I did have some idea of what I was going up against,” she said.
The Cavaliers (2-9, 1-0) are scheduled to continue conference play on Monday at Booker T. Washington High School.
