Fall-themed forum set

There’s no better way to spend a fall Saturday, in Shelley Barlow’s opinion, than gardening, or at least learning about it.
Suffolk folks will have that opportunity on Sept. 26, when the Suffolk Partnership for a Healthy Community will hold a fall-themed garden forum at Johnson’s Gardens.
“We had such great response from the one in June that we thought we wanted to do this again,” said Barlow, the community garden program coordinator.
About 90 people attended the June forum and had good things to say, Barlow said. The partnership decided to bookend the gardening season with another forum.
“The whole idea with the garden program is we’re trying to promote people having gardens around the city,” Barlow said. “We’re trying to encourage people raising a few things of their own.”
Barlow said this forum include experts to answer people’s gardening questions. Three workshops ranging from Thanksgiving table arrangements to home canning techniques also are planned.
For the children, mini pumpkins will be available for painting while supplies last.
“I know there’s a lot of things going on in the fall, but I think it’s a good way to spend a Saturday morning,” Barlow said. “We encourage folks to come out and enjoy the day and find out more about the partnership and what we’re doing with the community gardens.”
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Johnson’s Gardens, 3201 Holland Road. Registration begins at 8:30.
At 9 a.m., a Thanksgiving boot camp with Dedra Blount, owner and chef of Now You’re Cooking, will take place. A class on making Thanksgiving table arrangements, led by Tim Johnson, will take place at 10 a.m., with safe home canning techniques from Wanda Gerard at 11 a.m.
